Stonewalled Ramapo New York

I found a photo taken by my niece, Danielle, in a photography class, which she gave me, it was a beautiful black and white photo, and thought I would give it a go in sepia. Thought I would share, it is not a horse, or a dog...thought you might appreciate something different!

  1. Maria - this is a great sepia value study! I like the feeling it gives me, the viewer. I feel like I am looking at a scene from a fairytale. My imagination was sparked by that deep look back into the trees mid- painting. Nice depth!

  2. Thanks Pattie, I enjoyed working with one color more than I thought I would, but I worked with a black and white photo reference, I will have to give it a go with a color photo...see how that goes!

  3. I agree with Pattie, it does look like it could be an illustration in a book of fairy tales. Beautiful work!

  5. Excellent painting. Before I read the other comments I thought to myself this looks as if you have painted a magical, fairy wood.
And you've done it really well. Congrats xx

  6. Thanks everyone, my niece took this photo and it is from the stonewall that ran along our property line where I grew up, there used to be a gate here that let to the back pasture, I spent a lot of time wrestling that gate, bringing in horses and turning them out, I remember spilling icy water down onto my feet trying to get through the gate with water buckets....it really was quite the magical place when I was a kid!
