Starting with a sketch

sketch for my next painting  ©MariasWatercolorArt
For my portraits, I start with a pencil sketch.  Have started to sketch on a sketchpad and transfer to my watercolor paper, so I don't have too many pencil marks on the watercolor paper.  Had an artist give me some tips on my drawing and have taken them to heart.  Going back to the basics of practicing the drawing.  Getting the shapes and perspective right.  Trying to sketch each day.

  1. Aww, that's a sweet picture! We used to have a sheltie who looked like that.

  2. And I believe the right way to approach any piece of art is with a solid foundational drawing. Beautiful!

  3. This is a great drawing! I draw every day too. I just think drawing is the backbone of good art. For me it is, anyway. I love your dog, he looks a lot like mine!

    1. Thank you Katherine! I have gotten a a bit lazy with my drawing lately, so I declared it time to dust off the sketchbooks, do something little each day. Maybe try some charcoal sketching too?!
